Hygrophorus leucophaeus ([Scop.] Fr.) Karst. syn. Limacium leucophaeum ([Scop.] Fr.) P. Henn. Rötlicher Schneckling. Cap 1.5–5cm across, convex, whitish buff with rusty brown at the prominent umbo, slightly viscid. Stem 30–70 x 4–7mm, whitish with a faint rust flush. Flesh thick at centre of cap, whitish. Taste and smell not distinctive. Gills decurrent, whitish buff. Spore print white. Spores ovoid-ellipsoid, 6.5–8 x 4um. Habitat in deciduous woodland, especially beech. Season autumn. Occasional. Edible. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.) Distribution, America and Europe.
